FALL BRIDAL JEWELLERY SELECTION
If you are planning a fall wedding and would like to add some colour to your accessories this is the time to do it. The beautiful golds, browns, reds and yellows are just perfect applications for your bridal jewellery.
Whether you choose your bridal jewellery by the theme of your wedding, the formality, the colours or the season, you will see that your ideas for inspiration are unlimited. Keep in mind that some of the ideas illustrated in this article and you will be well on your way to beautiful, radiant bridal jewellery
FALL 2009 JEWELLERY TRENDS
1. Cuff Bracelets: Larger cuff bracelets are bold, daring, and adventurous. Today’s’ bride isn’t a demure little flower – our ladies scream "Look at Me!" Cuffs add vaa-vaa-voom to any bridal outfit.
2. Colours other than White: We all love diamonds and pearls but sometimes a girl needs a little something different. Coloured gems and yellow diamonds are hot right now.
3. Old Hollywood: Classic old Hollywood glamour is all the rage. If you watched the Emmys this year you saw it everywhere (you know it’s hot if Heidi Klum is wearing it!). Whats the best part of this trend? You will forever look dashing and stylish in your wedding photos. Some styles just never die and Old Hollywood Glamor Girl is definitely one of them.
4. Mother Nature: Flowers, butterflies, leaves, and rosettes are very popular this fall with wedding jewellery. Why? Maybe it’s because everyone has ‘going green’ on their minds or maybe its because these themes make us feel both feminine and girlie.

FAQ from our customers
Here are some of the most FAQ we get from our customers and their answers:
HOW CAN I BE SURE THAT THE CRYSTALS I BUY ARE GENUINE SWAROVSKI?
Swarovski® crystal components are generally regarded as the finest machine-cut beads in the world. Swarovski® include a special compound which give their beads their own famous brilliance. Swarovski® have no bubbles inside.
The Swarovski® AB finish crystals have a smooth uniform coating: there are no swirl marks Swarovski® crystals are perfectly uniform. As they are computerized machine-cut, every crystal of the same design is identical: same height, slope and width.
With so many crystal beads and components out there, how can you tell if the crystal you are purchasing is actually a Swarovski® crystal component....or an imitation?
Here are some tips that can help you determine which crystals are real:
1. Swarovski® crystals are generally not strung when offered for sale.
2. Swarovski® crystals are perfectly uniform. Since they are machine cut, each crystal is the same. This means that the height, width and slope are consistent. A hand polished imitator bead will not have as uniform a cut. You may also notice different dimensions from bead to bead.
3. The precision cutting of Swarovski® machinery allows each crystal to have its facet juncture "pointing up". This means the facet junctures all meet at precisely the same point.
4. AB finish Swarovski® crystals have a uniform surface luster. There are no swirling marks from the vacuum process that produces the AB finish, and generally there are no scratches. The "imitations" often have scratches, swirl marks ("oily" looking surface). Some of these imperfections, in the "imposters", have to do with the lower quality of the finish
5. Because of its special glass compounds, Swarovski® crystal will out-sparkle a bead of lesser quality when placed in a side-by-side comparison.

SUMMER/FALL 2009 JEWELLERY TRENDS
Here are some hot jewellery design tips for Summer/Fall 2009 - courtesy of Veronika Melnyk, a professional jewellery designer and instructor.
For all of you who are busy with your own home jewellery businesses I thought of some tips on the key trends that might be helpful.
As always we must begin with the colours.
There are 3 important colours for the season:
1. BLACK & WHITE. I believe using fabric wrapped beads, printed ceramic, and glass beads that are imperfect is a great way to achieve a crisp, but natural look for this palette.
2. YELLOW & CORAL is the warm pallet this season.
3. AMAZONITE GREENS & TRANSLUCENT TURQUOISE look great for a cool spring palette.
Try mixing matte and shiny beads for a beachy feeling. Touches of raffia for texture make a nice contrast, and using a brown or natural material to ground the colours is a new way to do blue.
• Seed beads
• Chunky wooden beads
• Swarovski crystals
• Freshwater pearls
• Citrine
• Amethyst
• Garnet
• Quartz
• Printed and painted shell
Good luck with designing your own jewelry collections, and do not forget to stop in for more inspiration at GlamourJewellery.com!

Had exhibitions in Ukraine, Germany and Poland. Her artworks are held in private collections in the U.S.A., Canada, Ukraine, Greece and Israel. Also, one of her work was donated to the St. Vladimir's Ukrainian Institute.
Veronika works in different techniques (watercolor, oil, acrylic, egg tempera) and genres.
In her jewellery designs, Veronika uses sterling silver, gold, freshwater pearls, Swarovski crystals, gem stones and semi precious stones.
JEWELLERY CLEANING & STORAGE
Protect all jewellery from sharp blows, harsh chemicals, sunlight and extreme temperatures.
Chlorine and related chemicals can severely discolor and damage jewellery as well as loosen stones and settings.
Put jewellery on after using cosmetics, hair spray or perfumes to avoid contact with substances and chemicals which may cause damage.
Carefully wipe jewellery with a soft chamois or flannel cloth after each wearing to remove oils and salts. This is especially important for pearls.
Store jewellery separately, so it will not scratch other jewellery. Freshwater pearls are best stored in a special chamois pouch because of their softness. Never store pearls in plastic bags!
Storing beaded necklaces flat is highly recommended to reduce stretching.

REAL PEARLS VS. FAKE PEARLS
How can you distinguish real pearls from the fake ones? To find out the difference, you can put the "pearl" in your mouth and slosh it softly across your teeth. Does it feel very smooth? If it does, it's fake. The real thing feels slightly gritty.
There are other ways to test the pearls and one of the most reliable is to x-ray them. Just take them into a certified Gemologist and heave them do the testing. What you are looking for is round sphere and pockets within the pearl. Also, there are a few tests, which can help you to figure out whether your pearls are real.
1. Rub the pearls lightly across upper front teeth. Real pearls: should feel gritty or sandy. Fake: will feel smooth.
2. Examine the surface of the pearls with a magnifying glass. Real: appears unusually fine-grained. Fake: may appear grainy.
3. Drill a hole in the Pearls: The examine the hole with a magnifying glass. Real: The edges of the hole in real pearls are smooth and sharp. Fake: The holes in fake pearls may appear bumpy or ragged.
4. Weight: Bounce the pearls in your hand. Real: feels heavy to hold. Fake: should feels unusually light, unless they are solid glass beads.
5. Flaws: Examine the pearls for flaws and blemishes. Real: will have at least minimal flaws. Fake: If they appear absolutely flawless they are most likely fake pearls.

IN BLOOM
Pictures taken from magazines and color swatches will help your florist create a bouquet that will suit you perfectly.
Your bridal bouquet is a burst of color that will catch everyone’s eye as you walk down the aisle. A skilled florist will use the colors of your wedding, as well as the colors of nature, to create an arrangement that is a beautiful compliment to your bridal gown.
Start shopping early for your florist. Choose the one who understands your vision the best. Take a photograph of your wedding gown and a swatch if you have one. These will help your florist recommend flowers and linen colors.
Ask your florist to adorn your bouquet with details that will reflect your wedding style. Fresh flowers will bring a touch of the season to your bridal bouquet.

BRIDAL JEWELRY 101
Different types of pearl necklaces used in wedding jewelry
The various lengths of pearl necklaces include the dog collar, choker, princess, matinee, and opera. A dog collar is made up of several strands of pearls stacked up on the neck. A necklace that rests at the base of the throat is termed a choker. A princess-length necklace rests above the bustline. A matinee-length necklace rests below the bustline. An opera length necklace falls around the waistline. A lavaliere is a pendant on a necklace.
Matching bracelets
Bracelets can be worn with sleeveless, short-sleeve, and three-quarter sleeve gowns. You can combine a bracelet with gloves as a dramatic accessory worn over tight-fitted gloves. Most watches are not appropriate wedding jewelry for the bride or her maids.
Earring
A button earring accentuates a round face. A dangle earring widens a narrow face. A squared earring adds interest to a long face.
Jewelry for bridesmaids
Most bridesmaid ensembles can be enhanced with earrings and perhaps a necklace or bracelet. All maids should wear the exact same jewelry.

WHO PAYS FOR THE WEDDING?
Traditionally, there was a very simple answer to this question – the bride’s family paid for just about everything. Today, weddings are paid for in any one of several ways: sometimes the bride and groom, sometimes the couple’s families, sometimes only the bride’s family and sometimes only the groom’s family. In some cultures, the betrothed couple have sponsors who pay for various items in the wedding celebration.
No matter who is paying for the wedding, it is very important to decide how much you are going to spend before you begin shopping. It is very difficult to shop for your wedding vendors if you don’t know how much money you have available.
An important factor to consider when planning your budget is the number of guests you are going to have. It is also important to have a sense of your own priorities as you plan. Knowing what is most important to you will help make your decision easier.
MAKE A GUEST LIST.
The first step to planning the perfect wedding is to plan your guest list. The most variable expense you will have is the cost of providing your guests with food and drink. There is a huge cost difference between having 100 guests and 150 guests. In order to plan a realistic budget, you must have a good estimate of the number of guests who will attend.
CHECK IT TWICE.
To get a more accurate idea of the true number of guests, write out your guest list, then divide the guests into those who will most certainly attend, those who will most likely not attend and those who are just as likely to go either way. Divide the list of those who are likely to go either way in half, and add them to the list of those who will most likely attend. That will be a good estimate of your final guest numbers.
CREATE A BUDGET.
Once you have a working guest list, the nest step is to decide what items you want to include in your wedding budget and how important each item is to you. Once you set these priorities you will know how much money you are able to spend for each vendor.
WEDDING FASHION
Searching for the perfect wedding gown should be fun process, and trying on all the beautiful dresses and wonderful styles will make you feel like a princess.
Look through the bridal magazines to determine what styles you like, but go shopping with an open mind. Very often, gown consultants can direct you to a style you didn’t consider, but will be perfect for you.

WEDDING GUIDE: HIS & HERS
The bride isn’t the only one who needs to look stylish on the wedding day. The groom needs to take the time to find the perfect tuxedo to complement the style of the wedding.
Take the time to go to the reputable formalwear shop in your area. You don’t necessarily need to go to a national chain, even if your wedding party doesn’t live in town. Most tuxedo shops will do measurements even if you aren’t renting the tuxedo from their shop.
Have your entire wedding party try on their tuxedos as soon as they arrive at the shop. Make sure everything fits correctly, and that all the pieces are there. Count cuff links and button studs if they are included. And don’t forget to try on the shoes.
Make sure all the groomsmen have black socks to wear with the tuxedo. You may want to pack some extra pairs in your wedding day emergency kit, in case someone shows up with white tube socks.
You’ll wear your engagement ring every day for the rest of your life. Invest the time and effort to find rings you will be happy with for decades to come.
Always work with a reputable jeweler. Ask friends and family if they have any experience with a particular company. Do your research up front to find a jeweler you can trust.
When shopping for rings, take the time to try on several different styles of rings. See how cut looks on your hand before deciding. Also, consider how the engagement ring looks with your ring. You will be wearing them together, so they should coordinate.
Educate yourself on the grading scale of diamonds, so you know what you are looking for when you shop. Find a design you love! Cut, clarity, and color are important once you’ve settled on a design, but the ring should make you say wow!
Don’t take any chances in case it gets lost or stolen; insure your ring immediately after purchasing it.

WHAT CAN I WEAR AS AN ALTERNATIVE 2 A TIARA?
What would you do if you are not interested in wearing a tiara on your wedding day and you think it looks beautiful on other brides, but it’s not really your taste… you like some kind of floral/roses head piece that resembles the shape a tiara would give, but you can not find anything like that on the on-line. Some people are saying that real flowers may not be a good idea because of discoloration, etc. Any alternative suggestions? …Sure just go to a florist and ask them to make you a flower arrangement in place of a tiara, ask them to have them dried for you. Or you can go to a fabric or crafts store and buy the flowers and create one yourself.

HOW 2 SELECT Bridal Hair Pins
Do different trials to see if the hair pins look best worn alone or with another accessory, such as a veil or heavy necklace. The presence of another accessory will affect the style of hair pins that will look best.
Decide on your hairstyle for the big day. No single hair pin design will go with every style.
Make you decision on two basic looks: modern or classic. Classic hair pins tend to be simple and elegant, whereas modern styles involve more colors, designs and shapes.
Buy your wedding gown before you buy your hair pins/accessories. The pin or pins you wear should match the style of your dress.

TIPS 4 MEN BUYING PEARL JEWELLERY 4 WOMEN!
With pearl's popularity growing back dramatically, a traditional white pearl strand becomes a kind of must-have jewellery in each woman's wardrobe. Surprise her by giving her a piece of pearl jewellery as a special gift becomes such a romantic thing for a man to do.
However, when we imagine that we must look for a computer game for our boyfriends, we understand how hard it is for guys to find the right jewellery for their lovers.
As the fans of pearls, working in the pearl jewellery industry, we would like to give you some great ideas... Start from learning some basic knowledge of pearl quality and then, find out the style she likes.
Always remember:
1. Nacre of the pearl
2. Surface
3. Luster
4. Shape
5. Size
A good quality pearl is always thick in nacre, smooth in surface, high in luster, and round in shape and big in size. However, shape, size and color are more for personal preference.
If you are looking for a strand, you also need to pay attention to its matching. Lay the strand into a straight line. Compare the size, color, surface, shape and luster of each pearl. A good match in these aspects results in a good strand.
Pearl jewellery style
When you are deciding the style, there are so many aspects to consider, such as color, pearl size and shape, pearl strand or designed pearl necklace, etc.
You may pay attention to the clothes and jewellery she often wears.
If you have already got some ideas but not so sure, you may seek for a chance to tactfully find out her ideas. For example, she is reading a fashion magazine, and you come to sit next to her and pretend you accidentally see a celebrity picture, then you make a fake commend, such as "This necklace is too big for her! I think a pink smaller one is better, what do you think?" or "I think this necklace looks better on you!" Women are always excited to talk about fashion. When you seem to be interested in it, she will patiently give you a full lesson about all her ideas of fashion - from blouses to shoes. In the end, you may skip most of the lesson, but pick up the information you want - which style of pearl jewellery she likes.
If you still have no idea, go to shop around. Ask the store assistant to show you some feminine style of pearl necklaces or bracelets. Feminine style is universal because it is always suitable for weddings, birthday, anniversary.

WEDDING JEWELLERY CLEANING AND STORAGE
Fine jewelry should be cleaned regularly. There are three good habits to develop that will guarantee that your bridal jewelry will bring you pleasure for many years:
1) get a habit of removing your wedding jewelry before activities that could result to a hard blow to the stone and cause damage.
2) Always put your wedding jewelry on last. Hairsprays and cosmetics contain chemicals that could cause damage, especially to cultured pearls.
3) Store fine jewelry in a soft pouch or in separate compartments of a jewelry box.
4) Store beaded necklaces flat is highly recommended to reduce stretching
CLEANING GEMS & DIAMONDS
Always check with your jeweler on the best cleaning methods for your jewelry. In most cases mild soap and water also works well. NOTE: Never use a soap and water solution with: amber, coral, emerald, jade, kunzite, lapis, lazuli, opal, pearl, or turquoise.
CARING FOR PEARLS
Your jeweler should provide you with an instruction for caring for your pearls. Do not use soap and water to clean them or an ultra sonic cleaner. You should wipe pearls with a soft cloth after wear. It is good to wear pearls regularly. They need the exposure to air and moisture to maintain their luster. Leave them on the bathroom counter when you are showering. The steam from the shower is good for them. If your pearls are stored in a safe deposit box, or not worn that often, it is a good practice to keep a vial of water in the box.

TIPS ON CHOOSING A HEADPIECE
First of all, chose your gown, and then choose your accessories to compliment your gown and you.
Having a good idea of a hairstyle that you like will usually help in deciding on the headpiece.
Match the type of sparkle in your gown with the sparkle in your accessories. Use crystals with crystals, rhinestones with rhinestones and pearls with pearls. Look for a headpiece with similar detailing as your gown. Gold-tone or ivory pearl-accented tiaras are a good compliment to ivory gowns, while silver-tone, rhinestone, and white pearl tiaras best compliment the tones of a white gown. Diamond white gowns are a good match for either gold or silver.
Keep in mind that tiaras are not just for the bride; they are perfect for bridesmaids and flower girls as well.
If you have short or fine hair you will want to decide on a lighter, more delicate tiara that will not require lots of pinning to hold it in place. Brides with shorter hair look best in headband styles or tiaras with a smaller shaped comb.

TIPS: HOW TO CHOSE THE RIGHT EARRINGS
If you are working woman, then pearl-studs are the right and appropriate choice irrespective of shape of your face and hair style. Select simple studs with pure pearls, or corals, small stones, or pure gold.
If you are going for parties or attending special occasions then beautiful ear rings depend on your face shape will multiply your original beauty
Based on shape of the face:
1. Any earrings will suit the oval;
2. Round should wear hoops, avoid long earrings;
3. Downward triangle should wear drop earrings, avoid studs.
Based on the beauty enhancement factor, drop earrings are the best. Studs bring the least effect, because studs are not quite visible to others, especially if you grow long hair.
Young girls at school age should wear studs, hoops or drop earrings, avoid lengthy earrings. Boys should go with studs and hoops. Same rule applies for adult women in work and daily life. For men, the rule applies for all occasions.
For other occasions, especially party, long earrings are encouraged for women to enhance their beauty. Thread earrings will also look good for parties, but is not practical to wear continuously in daily life.
The right pair of earrings can make or break an outfit. As with all jewelry a pair of earrings should reflect your personal style. There are, however, some guidelines to make sure the earrings you wear can make you look your best.
Keep in mind though that your earrings should complement your outfit, not overpower it. They can also draw attention away from some of your figure flaws as the right pair of earrings draws the eye upward and gives attention to your face. Even if you wear no other jewelry, a pair of earrings can make you look stylish and well polished.
TIPS... TIPS... TIPS... MORE ABOUT BRIDAL JEWELRY
The best way to choose earrings is to try them with your gown. The best styled earring will depend on the neckline of your gown, the type of necklace you are wearing, and how you will be wearing your hair. You want your earrings to be seen but you do not want them to be overpowering.
Drop earrings or short dangle earrings work well and pearls or diamonds add elegance and sparkle. If you are not wearing a necklace, you may want to wear more dramatic earrings. If your dress is beaded and sparkly then you’ll want to choose a more subtle earring so as not to detract from your gown.
Diamonds are a girl’s best friend. Pearls are truly a bride’s best friend. Pearls never go out of style, but this season they aren’t just in style, they are “hot”.
Not only are they “hot” they are very versatile. Pearls have been worn by fashionable women for ages. You can choose to spring for cultured pearl or purchase quality imitation pearls for a fraction of the cost.
A choker measures 14-16 inches and is the most versatile length to own. It will work with any gown neckline. The 17-19 inch
Princess with either very high or very low necklines: there are longer lengths of pearls available however they are not very suitable for wedding gowns.
Vintage jewelry is hot right now and can lend an added dimension to your bridal look. So if you have a favorite piece you would like to borrow – ask.
Colorful jewelry is a great way to spice up your wedding day ensemble. Rubies, emeralds, and sapphires (real or fake) can add some punch to your wedding jewelry.
This season, colored pearls are a very “hot” fashion statement, available in a wide range of color from silver to bright pink. Just remember a little color is very good, but don’t go overboard and take away from your beautiful gown.
Dare to Be Bare. The options in jewelry can be overwhelming. How do you know which length necklace looks best with your wedding dress? Is your trendy four-strand pearl collar strung on wires a bit too trendy?
One way to go is to keep it simple. As for necklaces, you might decide to skip them altogether. This allows you to show off your dress’ stunning neckline whether it’s strapless or high or in-between.
And it allows you to show off your neck, which you might not want to show off in 30 years. You can also completely forego bracelets. Especially if you’re going to wear gloves, a bracelet can look funny and get in the way.
The norm is to not wear a watch unless it is elegant and delicate enough for wedding day attire. However, these day’s even your watch can count as a piece of jewelry.
There are some fabulous fashion watches available, many look like a bracelet. So if you just can’t bear not wearing a watch, go shopping.
The choices for your hair jewelry are endless. Tiaras are very popular right now, however adding a necklace with the tiara might be a bit much. Sparkling crystal and rhinestone clips or pins are a nice touch to the bride’s hair adding a subtle sparkle.
The most important thing to remember is to keep your gown the center of attention. What ever jewelry choice you make, be they trendy, traditional, or funky be certain they work well with your gown and compliment it not over power it.

GEM STONES INFO
AGATE
Agate is a microcrystalline variety of quartz (silica), chiefly chalcedony, characterized by its fineness of grain and brightness of color. It is beautiful mineral that occurs in an amazing variety of colors, shapes and patterns. Although agates may be found in various kinds of rock, they are classically associated with volcanic rocks but can be common in certain metamorphic rocks.
Agate is extremely beautiful and most noted for its banded and multicolored schemes. For instance, the bands on many Agate stones wrap around the stone like a tree’s rings in various colors. These stones have been sought after since the beginning of time and through the ages man has given them mystical qualities such as making one invisible or protecting one from sickness. Today, Agate comes in many different varieties on almost any type of jewelry piece.
AMBER
Although Amber is usually categorized as a precious gemstone due to some of its qualities, it is actually a fossilized resin. Amber has been known to man since the beginning of time and since Amber forms naturally around the world, it has been used mainly as ornamental jewelry. The largest deposits of Amber are located near the Baltic and Black Seas; in fact, today you can take a net and actually fish for Amber. Usually Amber comes from the floor of the sea that has been fossilized between 30 million and 90 million years ago.
Amber was also given magical powers in ancient and medieval times. For instance, Amber is associated with good luck and the cycle of life. Amber is considered good for longevity, it is also said to make the person wearing Amber more electric or magnetic, ultimately more attractive. It is also said that Amber protected one against rheumatism and gout, as well as a snake bite. Many newborns were given Amber to wear as infants, in order to guard themt from evil forces witches, the devil and witchcraft.
AMBER Treatments
The famous Vienna amber factories which use pale amber to manufacture pipes and other smoking tools, apply a specific procedure when working amber: it is turned on the lathe and polished with whitening and water or with rotten stone and oil, the final lustre being given by friction with flannel. During the working a significant electrostatic charge is developed.
When gradually heated in an oil-bath, amber becomes soft and flexible. Two pieces of amber may be united by smearing the surfaces with linseed oil, heating them, and then pressing them together while hot. Cloudy amber may be clarified in an oil-bath, as the oil fills the numerous pores to which the turbidity is due. Small fragments, formerly thrown away or used only for varnish, are now utilized on a large scale in the formation of "ambroid" or "pressed amber". The pieces are carefully heated with exclusion of air and then compressed into a uniform mass by intense hydraulic pressure; the softened amber being forced through holes in a metal plate. The product is extensively used for the production of cheap jewelery and articles for smoking. This pressed amber yields brilliant interference colours in polarized light. Amber has often been imitated by other resins like copal and kauri, as well as by celluloid and even glass. True amber is sometimes coloured artificially. Often amber (particularly with insect inclusions) is counterfeited using a plastic resin similar in appearance. A simple test (performed on the back of the object) consists of touching the object with a heated pin and determining if the resultant odor is of wood resin. If not, the object is counterfeit, although a positive test may not be conclusive owing to a thin coat of real resin. Often counterfeits will have a too perfect pose and position of the trapped insect.
AMETHYST
Amethyst is a gemstone that is crystallized quartz. Amethyst is known throughout the world for its beauty. This crystalline gemstone usually comes in beautiful colors such as violet and purple. It is also important to note that Citrine is created from heat treated Amethyst, Citrine’s color is yellow orange.
Amethyst is the most valuable of the quartz minerals. Amethyst is only used for ornamental jewelry, due to its beauty, hardness and attraction, however it has been coveted for many reasons going back to legends and folklore.
For the most part, Amethyst can be cut to various shapes and sizes and can be found as earrings, on bracelets, charms, and rings. Amethyst was believed to have many special qualities, including the ability to prevent intoxication, for this reason many cups or glasses are bejeweled with Amethyst especially antique glasses from ancient Roman and Greek times.
Amethyst is also the birthstone for February. It is extremely popular during this month as it is given as birthday gifts, usually as ornamental jewelry. It is also popular as a gift for those that are into Astrology. Amethyst is popular with those that are Aquarians and Pisces.
Amethyst has had many uses in ancient and medieval times. For instance, it was used to overcome addictions. Many people that had a hearing disorder, headaches or pain used Amethyst as a way to treat it. Amethyst was also used for insomnia and to stabilize mental disorders.
CAT'S EYE
Cat’s Eye is usually a term used for a property in a gemstone or mineral. Cat’s Eye can be found in many different materials including Quartz, Beryl and ChrysoBeryl. The Cat’s Eye
The Cat’s Eye is mainly used as ornamental jewelry and does not have any industrial uses. The Cat’s Eye is mainly used for ornamental jewelry and has been treasured for thousands of years.
Cat’s Eye is associated with wisdom, truth and psychic abilities. For people looking for a great gift for a philosophical person, a Cat’s Eye is sure to please. Cat’s Eye can be fashioned into many types of ornamental jewelry but mostly likely purchased as a ring or charm.
The Cat’s Eye is not associated with any birth month or astrological signs, however many people give the Cat’s Eye to a person that is Sagittarius or for those that have a birthday during the month of November to highlight the philosophical and intellectual qualities.
CITRINE
Citrine is a type of quartz which is associated with being yellow or yellow orange in color. It is a hard crystal that grows around a macro crystalline structure, this means that its six sided crystal shape is easy to spot with the naked eye. It is transparent and has a wonderful vitreous luster. It is important to note that Citrine gets its wonderful yellow color from small particles of iron inside the quartz. These particles are said to only number about 40 parts per million. Since Citrine is a beautiful looking stone, it is mostly used for ornamental jewelry.
Citrine and Amethyst are the exact same minerals, only the oxidation has changed inside the mineral. You can change the oxidation simply by heating it or irradiating it. In fact, because Citrine is rare in its natural state, a large majority of Citrine sold today is simply Amethyst heated up.
CORAL
One of the most distinctive ornamental jewelry items around is Coral. Coral is not a mineral or gemstone per say, it is actually a secretion formed by thousands upon thousands of small organisms. Coral is calcium carbonate, which is essentially like aragonite or marble. Small Coral polyps secrete this material to create a habitat for protection in the sea.
Coral comes in many fine colors including orange, white, black, pale or pink which is called Angelskin Coral and even in a deep red, which is the rarest type and sometimes referred to as fire Coral. While the majority of Coral is used for ornamental jewelry, older Coral reefs that are now found in land are used as a building supply, called Coral rag. There are a few prehistoric Coral reefs that are now found in land on the Isle of Portland, as well as in Africa. Because calcium carbonate is a tough and strong material, it is a great product to build homes and other structures with. Since dried up Coral reefs are usually huge in scale, it is an affordable material as well.
It should be noted that while most of the Coral that is sold is natural and genuine, there are fake Coral products available as well. They are usually created either by plastic, glass or porcelain. It is easy to spot fake Coral because true Coral which is made from calcium carbonate will effervesce when it comes into contact with acid, fake Coral from plastic, glass and porcelain will not.
GARNET
Garnets are a very popular mineral that has been known to man for thousands of years. Garnets are mostly known as a beautiful warm, red stone that can have translucent crystals or be grainy in appearance. Garnets have a long history and were even written about in the Old Testament as Noah Ark’s lantern.
The Garnet come is a myriad of colors including red, green, violet, yellow, and earthy colors such as cinnamon. The only color that a garnet is not available in is blue. One of the reasons Garnets are held in high esteem is the way that they shine and give off light. This is due to their refractive properties. The Garnet gemstone is a great stone to make ornamental jewelry with. It has a hardness score of 7.5 to 8 on the Moh’s scale and can be crafted into almost any shape. They are generally stable and will keep their color for generations as long as they don’t come into contact with intense heat or radiation.
HEMATITE
Hematite is a very common mineral, it fact, it is the major mineral that is needed to create iron. Hematite is written as Fe2O3 and is commonly referred to as iron oxide. Hematite is a mineral that does grow crystals and is similar to structure with Limonite as well as Corundum.
Hematite comes in various colors including black, gray, silver, brown, rust, reddish brown and red. Red is the color usually associated with hematite for jewelry purposes, however black Hematite is sometimes referred to as a black Diamond. Hematite is used for many functions, some of them being ornamental jewelry, face paint and it is the major mineral used to form iron. While Hematite alone is harder than pure iron, it is very brittle only having a harness rating of 5 to 6.
Today, Hematite is a popular mineral used in jewelry. Its earthy tones are very attractive to many consumers and you can also find hematite used with fabrics as well as Native American art and jewelry. While hematite is not as popular as other well known gemstones and minerals, hematite is extremely attractive and a great gift for the right person.
JADE
Jade is one of the most unique and popular gemstones in the world. While it is popular and precious in Europe and the United States, it is on a much higher level in popularity and tradition in East Asia, specifically China.
Jade is a very hard mineral stone that is actually name given to two distinct stones. Jadeite and Nephrite are both considered true and traditional Jade. It wasn’t until1863 that Jade was discovered to be created from two distinct stones. These stones are extremely similar to one another and are usually indistinguishable by the naked eye.
MOONSTONE
One of the most interesting stones available is the moonstone. Moonstone has been known to man since the beginning of civilization and its wonderful qualities is what makes it a treat to the eyes and senses.
Moonstone is made from Feldspar an extremely common stone. Feldspar covers perhaps 60% of the earth’s crust and is from the German word meaning field rock. Moonstone contains no metals or ores, but does have a crystal structure to it.
Moonstone’s most common use is that of ornamental jewelry. It has some distinct attributes including adularescence, which is the ability of light to enter into the crystalline structure and bounce back and forth creating an aura or shimmering quality. This quality is what makes moonstone the most valuable. Moonstone can come in many colors; however the most popular color is blue. Other colors that Moonstone can come in are yellow, brown, green and multi colored.
MOTHER OF PEARLS
Mother of Pearls is an extremely common type of mineral. While these minerals are extremely beautiful and depending on their quality valuable, they are considered organic minerals because they are created by living organisms.
Mother of pearls are made from mollusks, specifically oysters and abalones. These mollusks secrete calcium carbonate which is silky to the touch and extremely beautiful. Calcium carbonate is generally a hard mineral and will stand up to daily use. While most people are familiar with pearls, mother of Pearls are the same type of mineral except not in a pearl form.
Mother of Pearls are used for a variety of applications. While they can be used as ornamental jewelry, many times Mother of Pearls are used for industrial applications such as home products including tile flooring and materials that are added to fine instruments. Tiles are created from Mother of Pearls and are typically called Tessa Rae. These are small tiles that can be put together with grout for many home applications. Another way to use Mother of Pearl tiling is for it to be attached to large sheets of fiber glass and then applied easily in a kitchen or home.
Mother of Pearls are also used as the lining of a sink and give it a beautiful luxurious luster. Mother of Pearl is white, but usually can be found with beautiful iridescent colors. The reason for this iridescence is that because the structure of Mother of Pearl is very small and very similar to the size of light wave lengths.
MYSTIC TOPAZ
Mystic Topaz is usually a clear Topaz stone that has been enhanced or treated. Mystic Topaz is not a gemstone that occurs naturally and its major function is that of beautiful ornamental jewelry.
Mystic Topaz is a fairly new process for treating Topaz. Topaz is one of the more common gemstones and the Mystic Topaz is known for its clear Topaz stone that is then coated with an extremely thin layer of titanium or other type of metal on the bottom portion of the stone, commonly referred to as the pavilion. Treating the Topaz makes the Mystic Topaz refract or reflect wonderful rainbow colors which have beautiful blues, yellows, reds and greens.
PERIDOT
Peridot, pronounced Pear-ih-doe is a wonderful gemstone that is very popular for its olive green hue. In fact, its gemstone name is Peridot, but the mineral from which it comes from is called Olivine. Olivine is mineral that usually contains many elements including most of all magnesium, some iron, silica rock or stone and oxygen. It is important to note that in particular, deep green stones usually have two element additions, nickel and chromium.
Usually Peridot is found in rocks that are high in iron or magnesium. Unfortunately, Peridot is not found in many regions around the world. This fact is possibly due to the way in which Peridot is very susceptible to weathering. For instance, high heats, water and friction can easily destroy Peridot. This is not only true in deposits in mines and under the surface, but for ornamental jewelry that is created from these wonderfully hued stones.
TOPAZ
Topaz is a wonderful gemstone that is extremely popular and found in many regions around the world. Topaz has been known to man for millennia and the name Topaz was generally used for any stone that was yellow in color.
Topaz is a type of fluorosilicate. It is created from many elements including aluminum, fluoride, silicon and oxygen. Besides these elements, it also can include trace elements that can help create or enhance the color of the Topaz. Topaz is found usually near silica rocks that are volcanic in origin. It is also found in volcanic cavities and in pegmatites.
ZIRCON
Zircon is an interesting mineral, especially since it is rare and usually misunderstood. Zircon is probably known most of all by its synthetic knockoff Cubic Zirconium. However, it should be noted that Zircon itself, is a natural forming gemstone that has a lot to offer.
Colorless Zircon has the distinction of being the mineral that comes closest to resembling a diamond naturally, usually due to its high refraction and fire. Some of the many regions that Zircon can be found in are Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia and Sri Lanka. However, Thailand is the world’s leading producer of Zircon.
CLEANING GEMSTONE JEWLLERY
After removing your gemstone jewellery, wipe it with a soft cloth to remove dirt and other residues.
In general, all you need to clean your gemstones is warm, soapy water and a very soft brush-a soft toothbrush and mild dishwashing liquid does a good job. Remove your jewellery, let it soak in the soapy water for about 20 minutes, and then gently brush it and rinse thoroughly. Be careful not to scratch the metal of your setting. Home ultrasonic cleaners are not recommended for all of your colored gemstones. Ruby and sapphire are typically safe to clean in an ultrasonic cleaner but other gemstones are not. Because of their porous composition, opals should never be cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaner. Similarly, emeralds should always be cleaned by hand.
STORING GEMSTONES
Store your gemstone jewellery in a lined case or a soft cloth, so the gems do not touch each other or parts of other jewellery. Gemstones are harder than gold, silver, or platinum and can scratch the surfaces of your other fine jewellery if they are not kept separate.
WEARING GEMSTONE JEWELLERY
While it's true that gemstones such as ruby and sapphire are second only to diamond on the hardness scale, it is not a measurement of their indestructibility. It means that these gemstones are able to resist scratching almost as well as diamond. Abrasive surfaces, harsh chemicals, and sharp blows can damage even the toughest gem. Your gemstone jewellery should be the last thing you put on when getting dressed and the first thing you take off at the end of the night. Store it carefully and it will be enjoyed for generations.
WEDDING JEWELLERY GUIDE
CASUAL OR FORMAL?
The first consideration in selecting your wedding jewellery is deciding whether your wedding will be casual or formal.Casual weddings do not always mean casual jewellery, but the jewellery tends to be more simple. For formal weddings, we recommend something more spectacular which enhances your traditional bridal ensemble and makes you feel stunning on your special day.
NECKLINE
Consider your wedding gown's neckline when deciding what type of jewellery to wear. Most gowns have a low or open neckline. This is perfect for accenting with an extravagant necklace and simple earrings. However, if your wedding gown has a high or closed neckline or the gown has a heavily beaded neckline or straps, forego the necklace and wear a striking pair of earrings instead. This is especially relevant if your hair is in an updo.
COLOUR THEME of YOUR WEDDING
Using a colour theme allows your wedding to have a distinctive and individual look and enhances the overall glamour of the occasion. For example, if your wedding colour theme is pink, bring it out in the bridal ensemble by adding a touch of the soft pink tone using pink crystals or pearls to your necklace or earrings.
SOMETHING NEW & SOMETHING BLUE
Every bride needs "Something new, something old, something borrowed and something blue." Add the "something blue" and "something new" by using soft light blue crystals in your jewellery. The delicate hues of these stones will give you a look that is unique and light.
PEARL COLOUR
True natural pearls are a beautiful, warm, off-white colour, not the bright white of the faux pearls that are widely available in bridal boutiques and they provide a stunning accent to any wedding dress. Faux or glass pearls are a less expensive option, but one boutique's "white" or "ivory" will be different from another's.
For a unique jewellery option, use coloured pearls. From delicate, champagne, gold, pink, to a rich gold or purple, pearls can provide a stunning accent to a wedding dress or to any bridal party. Coloured pearls combined with clear or coloured crystals make a striking combination.
A VOTE FOR PEARLS
The key to wearing chunky pearls or beads is not to over-accessorize the rest of the outfit. If you have on a major belt, stay away from a big necklace, and don’t wear a huge earring with the huge necklace. Choose your statement and wear it.
Do not reserve pearls only for cocktail dresses or suites. While that’s a classic look, pearls look more youthful when paired with a T-shirt.
Pearls work for every budget because, as lovely as the very expensive Tahitian pearls are.
They can be great looking and acceptable whether you are a liberal or a conservative.
Women with small features should wear small-scale beads – maybe multiple strands – while women with larger features can wear the larger beads.

MOTHER OF THE BRIDE: Jewelry Do’s and Don'ts
Next to the bride herself, her lucky groom and their wedding party, you will likely get a fair amount of attention your daughter's ceremony and the reception. Keep in mind too that you will be one of the stars in the wedding album. You want to be remembered by your future grandchildren for your hip fashion sense, not your hip replacement. Take a few tips from us on how to look your best when your little girl says her vows.
1. DO: Wear modern accessories
Fashion-forward jewelry Is not about abandoning the classics. Current styles – cascade earrings, lariat necklaces and charm bracelets
– have all been seen before. The trick to merging with the next generation is choosing pieces that feature colorful, interesting gemstones. Use them to bring out your eyes, pick up on a subtle color in your dress, or tie your ensemble into the wedding's color theme.
DON'T: Wear cheap ones
Don't confuse quality, contemporary, handmade jewelry with something you can find at a teenager's boutique at the mall. The basis for all beautiful jewelry – from that adorning everyone from Audrey Hepburn to Madilyn Monroe and Eleanor Roosevelt – is a sophisticated use of gold, goldfill and sterling silver, freshwater pearls.
2. DO: Celebrate your youth
Jewelry can be a great way to shave a few years off your bone structure. Pay attention to the shape of your face when you choose earrings – chandelier or cascading earrings flatter and fill negative space at the base of a heart- or oval-shaped face, while studs and short dangles elongate a round or square one. Neat, delicate necklace styles pick up on the curves of feminine collarbones, while long pendants distract from fleshier shoulders.
DON'T: Relive your youth
Resist the temptation to celebrate a little too much and go easy on the champagne. No one wants to pick the mother of the bride up off the dance floor – least of all the bride.
3. DO: Match the wedding color theme
Giving consideration to the photos and to your highly important role in this event, it's appropriate for the mother of the bride to include a small reference to the overall wedding theme. This is done most easily through gemstones, which come in all variety of color intensities and hues. For a subtle tribute, don a link bracelet with a single stone that dangles at the clasp. More conspicuously, pendant necklaces and cluster earrings can be customized to the color of your desire.
DON'T: Match the bridesmaids
Avoid choosing an outfit that matches the bridal party – or worse, clashes with it. It's best to distinguish yourself on your own terms.
4. DO: Keep colors low key
Depending on the wedding style, you'll have a lot of choices to make regarding the material, length, print and warmth of your outfit. Give yourself a break on at least one decision and avoid ostentatious prints and patterns altogether. Weddings are classified by simple, solid colors, and as an honorary part of the wedding party, you should follow suit, so to speak. Pick a color that looks good on you and then glam it up with accessories, as described above.
DON'T: Wear white
Or off-white, light tan, pale rose blush, or any other color that could be confused with white from a distance. This is your daughter's day, after all. Don't let anyone forget it.

COLOR-COORDINATED WEDDINGS
The hottest thing happening at wedding receptions isn't just on the dance floor -- it's on the cake, the invitations, the centerpieces, and even the bride's gown. It's big, bold color. Years ago brides used color to accent their white wedding day decor, but now they're using color to cover every inch of the wedding. We've developed a step-by-step guide on color coordination (from choosing it to decorating with it) to help you dream up a bright wedding day.
Choosing Your Color
First things first: location. When deciding on a scheme, you must consider the reception space or choose a space without decor or color. If you've chosen a country club with navy and maroon oriental carpets, a color scheme of lime green and hot pink won't work.
Next, become aware of color combinations that you like, whether browsing art galleries or flipping through a stack of fashion magazines. You might be able to narrow down your color choices to a half a dozen. To help you choose the exact hue for your wedding details, visit a fabric store or neighborhood paint shop and collect swatches or chips of colors you might want to use. This will help you get specific, so that when you decide on green you'll know if it's lime green, Kelly green, sage green, or forest green. If you have access to a Pantone book, use this collection of colors to select your shade the same way graphic designers do. Many invitation designers mix ink to match the colors in this book, and many cake bakers use Pantone numbers as a reference when creating dye for frosting. Can't decide on just one or two colors? Don't worry. In fact, many extraordinary weddings feature a variety of colors, sometimes up to five, that work together to create a specific sensibility -- like an "English garden" with green, yellow, pink, red, and brown, or "Fall in New England" with orange, red, brown, and gold.
Where & How to Execute Color
Where and how you use color really depends on the mood you are trying to create. The best way to get started is to figure out what emotions your want your celebration to evoke. A peaceful, Zen-like retreat? A regal, romantic affair? A jumping, high-energy party?
For instance, a vibrant summer yellow mixed with chocolate-brown (think sunflowers and bees) is perfect for a country-chic wedding style; add gold to the mix, and the combination becomes more reminiscent of Northern Italy. As another example, leaf green paired with cantaloupe is pretty for a waterside wedding; but pair this green with copper, and you have a color scheme that's formal enough for a ballroom or an estate setting. If your wedding takes place in multiple spaces, each room can have its own color scheme.
The Elements of Style
The Attire: The bride's gown doesn't have to be solid white, especially since color accents are increasingly more available. A blue or red sash around the waist is striking and still very bridal. The groom and his guys can also sport color in their ties or on their cuff links. But color will be most prominently displayed throughout the day in the bridesmaid dresses. Some fervent folks might want to match the dresses to the invitation ribbons, the favor tags, and the bouquets but this is not the only way to define a style. Mixing and matching dresses in varying shades -- pink and orange, or pale green and yellow -- can sometimes make a statement stronger than uniformity.
The Invitations: Your invitations set the stage for the event, so remember that mood you want to evoke? This is your time to show it off. Coordinating the invitation colors with those of the wedding can be as easy as choosing a color font, ribbon, or monogram or as elaborate as layering colorful cards.
Flowers & Decor: No matter what color you've chosen, chances are you will be able to find flowers in that shade -- but that, of course, does not mean the blooms will be available or affordable. If your dream flowers aren't an option, use neutral white flowers with centerpiece containers or other decor elements in your color.
Wedding Cake: The cake is one of the easiest places to add color -- all it takes is the right mixing. The color should reflect the other style elements used throughout the wedding. But when it comes to cake, your color options are the most flexible. White icing makes a marvelous background for colorful sugar flowers, sugar-paste stripes or polka dots, or other effects. Fondant can also be created in any number of shades. For instance, a yellow and brown country-chic wedding might have a wedding cake iced in a light brown basket weave and topped with fresh sunflowers.
The Favors: Ultimately, it's more important to give something meaningful rather than something that matches, but it can be a nice touch to your favors package in your color scheme. Use gift tags and ribbons to incorporate your colors into your favors. If favors will be left at each place setting, consider how they will look with your wedding linens and flowers.
New Ways to Use Color
We should point out that overdoing it with a matchy-match look is entirely possible. (You don't want your guests thinking, um, yeah, lavender...we get it.) Begin with the five essential wedding elements (attire, invitations, flowers, cake, and favors) and see where you can -- or should -- add more color. Then consider details such as napkins, candles, signature drinks, your ring pillow, or your guest book made from the same fabric and in the same color and as the bridesmaid dresses.
